What is a Grand Slam in tennis?
The four majors are played on three surfaces: hard courts in Melbourne and New York, clay in Paris and grass at Wimbledon. Each offers the most ranking points and prize money of the season.
In singles, the calendar-year Grand Slam has been won by Don Budge (1938), Maureen Connolly (1953), Rod Laver (1962 and 1969), Margaret Court (1970) and Steffi Graf (1988). Winning all four at different times is a Career Grand Slam.
