What is a seed in tennis?
The top seed and the second seed are placed in opposite halves of the draw, so they can only meet in the final. Seeding is based on ranking, and at some events can be adjusted.
In draws that aren't full, top seeds sometimes receive a bye, a free pass into the second round.
